Spam Tsunami

September 16th, 2009

Is it just me, or has there been a tsunami of junk mail and spam comments during the past 48 hours or so? WordPress currently has 17 comments in the Spam queue, which normally has maybe 2 or 3  at the most at any time.

Spam-Sept16-2009

WordPress Spam queue.

I also must have had about 50 messages in my email, much more than usual. The filters in Windows Live Mail are working pretty well, though. I’m glad that I replaced Outlook Express with it, although it took me a bit of time to get used to it. I just wish they had listened to my suggestion to show how many messages are in the storage folders, as it was in Outlook Express. It’s impossible to tell that there are any new messages in them when they’re all closed, and I have several email accounts, so I have some of the mail moved automatically to storage folders, and don’t keep my storage folders open because there’s just too many of them. I’m using Quick Views to get around that, by displaying all unread messages, but I’d still like to see the message counts on the storage folders, even if only optionally.

SPAM

January 24th, 2008

I received an interesting e-mail today, as well as the usual prescription drugs ones.

The subject is a simple “hi”, followed by this message:

QUOTE

Hello! My name Elena and me of 27 years. I was very much interested with your structure on a dating site and I to wish to get acquainted with you. If you has interested, you can write on my e-mail: lenachka2008@gmail.com. In the following letter I could tell about myself and send the photos. I hope you will give me chance and I shall like you!!! a

This is another evil cut and paste job or bot, and not a real girl at all.
What’s different about this one is that they usually claim that the email address they sent the message from isn’t theirs. They instruct you to send your reply to an alternate address, usually an address such as something@suspicioussoundingdomain.info.
It seems that they’re getting a bit smarter now, but it’s still suspect. It was not sent from the gmail server, and the sender’s IP is from an IANA Reserved IP address range.
And obviously, I’m not on any dating sites… I really don’t need them :whistling:
